We were celebrating
my birthday
but I was thinking
of societal collapse
I asked, When do we
stop going to work?
When do we fully commit
to being in the street
every day, fighting
for a better future?
And you said, When
the community is able
to support each other
in that action
And it began
to pour, soaking us
as we ran to the cab
& back to my apartment
And the next day
I was not in the street
but I was in bed with you
texting my boss something
about the alarm not working
or was it a headache
This stretching of the morning
a small refusal
To choose joy
over the cruel necessity
of work just once
To stay in bed a little longer
with you
