WHO WE ARE
bedfellows (est. 2013) is a Philadelphia-based literary magazine focused on discussions of desire & intimacy (including their lack), with an emphasis on underrepresented & marginalized voices. We're especially into work that subverts or confronts the stigmas or assumptions often attached to writing about sex, sexuality, & the body.
We believe that such writing isn't a niche or special interest. There are endless ways to approach these themes, from lyricism to full-on smut. Sex can be confusing, boring, silly, traumatic, transformative, disappointing, & hot. Bodies age, give birth, radically change, make sounds, experience deep pleasure & intense pain, behave unexpectedly. Gender identity, spirituality, culture, race, relationship structures & practices, solitude, dating apps, breakups, parenting, politics, sex work, kink, asexuality, queerness, health, money, & the entire gamut of our human experience all inform how we experience desire & intimacy.
bedfellows welcomes a multitude of interpretations & approaches, but we are most drawn to work that is inventive & distinct in its language, voice, form(s), &/or ways of exploring or approaching sex & desire.
